A short introduction to Lantereanism
Lantereanism is a secular craft of becoming, the lifelong art of turning curiosity into clarity and clarity into compassionate action.
We start with one candle-bright truth: every person, wherever they are born or however they live, holds equal worth and an innate capacity to grow. No gods sign our charter. The unfolding cosmos is wondrous enough to study, celebrate, and protect.
From that truth flow four Lanterean Principles:
Clarity Separate evidence from story, admit error quickly, and revise beliefs when new facts arrive.
Compassion Feel with others, speak truth with care, and repair harm when we cause it.
Creativity Unite science and art in order to invent better tools, rituals, and stories for human flourishing.
Stewardship Treat community, planet, and self as interconnected habitats we are obliged to improve.
Practices keep the flame alive: a daily three-breath pause, a weekly Lantern Walk at dusk to share questions, seasonal gatherings that reclaim solstice, harvest, and spring rites as moments of gratitude and service, and public fallacy audits where we examine how bias sneaks into our thinking.
Yet one lantern cannot light a city. Secular people often feel scattered, isolated sparks in a night that grows louder with dogma. Lantereanism therefore builds deliberate community, knitting local circles into a global network of shared purpose. Online forums, neighborhood meet-ups, and annual congresses allow us to pool knowledge, coordinate action, and offer companionship that neither shames doubt nor demands belief. When thousands of small lights synchronize, they form a lighthouse. Together we petition for evidence-based policy, rally for environmental protection, defend academic freedom, and show isolated doubters they are not alone. A united lantern chorus gives secular ethics a public voice strong enough to shape laws and cultures toward humane reason.
Authority rests with transparent process, not charismatic leaders. Texts, including this one, are drafted in pencil; every five years the community revises them. Shining brighter tomorrow counts more than being flawless today.
Success is measured by bridges built, between idea and evidence, feeling and reason, one neighbor and another. Whenever someone chooses cooperation over conquest, inquiry over certainty, or apology over pride, the world becomes one lumen brighter.
Carry a lantern, real or symbolic, as a reminder that light is for seeing, not burning. Step into the dark together, illuminate, and keep “becoming”.
